In 1680, the estate was purchased by Jacques de Ségur, who began producing high-quality wines. The estate remained in the Ségur family until the French Revolution, when it was seized by the government and sold to various owners. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the estate and began investing in its vineyards and winemaking facilities, turning it into the renowned estate it is today.

Château Lafite Rothschild produces mostly Cabernet Sauvignon-based blends, with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The wines are known for their elegance, finesse, and ageability, with flavors of blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco. The estate produces several wines, including the Grand Vin, which is the flagship wine, and the second wine, Carruades de Lafite.

The Grand Vin of Château Lafite Rothschild is considered one of the finest wines in the world and is highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, aged in new French oak barrels for 18 to 20 months before bottling. The wine is known for its balance, complexity, and longevity, with the potential to age for several decades.

Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild and is also highly regarded. It is a blend of the same grape varieties as the Grand Vin but is made from younger vines and aged in older barrels. The wine is softer and more approachable than the Grand Vin but still has the characteristic elegance and finesse of Château Lafite Rothschild.
